Youth In Action

Many youth in Manitoba are doing their part as global citizens by raising awareness on international issues and taking action to help improve the lives of others. Here are some examples of extraordinary acts of global citizenship happening right here in Manitoba. If you would like to tell us about what you or your school is doing to make the world a better place, email us at info@mcic.ca.

  • Douglas Elementary School

On June 15, 2009 the students of Douglas Elementary helped organize a fun and interactive assembly where they gave out 115 stainless steel water bottles to all staff and students. At the assembly students also held a draw for school merchandise as well as showing off the banner they created that read “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute”. Before handing out the stainless steel water bottles the 6 students who attended the Generating Momentum for Our World: Water for All conference presented in classrooms, sharing what they learned. The staff and students also made the news! The Brandon Sun newspaper and the local TV station covered their achievements.

  • École Morden Middle School

Students completed a water taste test with 70 students from grades 5 to 8. They created posters, which were put up all over the school with messages about global and local water. They also created a 13 minute video about water which was presented at a school assembly for over 500 elementary students. The video featured students dressed in elaborate costumes to illustrate a story about water.

  • Waywayseecappo Community School

A blossoming photographer and past participant of the Generating Momentum for Our World: Water for All middle years conference, Bernard Chief has been taking photographs in Waywayseecappo First Nation of everything that has to do with community water sources. He is in the process of creating a special photo exhibit that will help raise awareness about local water sources. The photo exhibit will potentially be displayed in the school and other locations in the community.

  • Strathclair Community School

Students from Strathclair Community School organized a trivia poster game about world water issues. The entire high school participated in the game which was played during Earth Week in April. A winner was drawn each day and they received a reusable water bottle. Their goal is to reduce the amount of bottled water that is sold at the school. The canteen has now stopped selling bottled water and is instead selling reusable water bottles. The school also purchased a water cooler which is filled with regular tap water. The cooler ensures that the water is cold so students do not have to purchase bottled water for it temperature.
