Manitoba Contributes $100,000 for Flood Relief in Philippines
Posted September 29th 2009
MCIC Board President Susan Roe-Finlay thanks Premier Gary Doer and the Government of Manitoba for their generous donation of $100,000 for flood relief in the Philippines. Premier Doer and Edda Pangilinan, Philippine Honorary Consul in Manitoba, look on.
Premier Gary Doer offered his condolences on Tuesday, September 29 to the families of those who have lost their lives as a result of the devastating typhoon that recently battered the Philippines and pledged $100,000 in support of the relief effort. The money will be administered by the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC).
“Our thoughts are with those who lost family and friends in this devastating typhoon,” said Doer. “I am pleased to be able to offer support on behalf of the Province of Manitoba in this time of great need.”
Edda Pangilinan, Philippine Honorary Consul in Manitoba, was present at the announcement to thank Premier Doer and the Government of Manitoba. MCIC Board President Susan Roe-Finlay was also present to receive the donation on behalf of MCIC and commend the Government on their pledge.
Official reports state that more than 300 people may be dead in the aftermath of the typhoon. They predict the death toll will rise as flood conditions allow for the spread of disease.
MCIC will distribute the $100,000 to its member agencies through the Relief and Rehabilitation Fund. Members doing relief work in the Philippines can submit proposals for funding their projects on the ground.
Manitoba is home to a number of organizations that do relief and development work overseas. MCIC works with member organizations to identify on-the-ground needs and acts to ensure assistance is distributed fairly and where it can provide the most benefit.
