Manitoban’s Work Celebrated for International Development Week 2013

Winnipeg, MB – To celebrate International Development Week 2013, the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) is recognizing the work of Derryl Reid from Clandeboye with a video profile.

International Development Week (IDW) runs from February 3-9, 2013. The theme for this year is I Am Making A Difference and MCIC is focusing on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). IDW is an opportunity to explore how Canada and Manitobans are making a difference in our world. The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) has profiled eight Manitobans from all walks of life who are contributing their time and effort to take action as global citizens.

Derryl Reid is from Clandeboye, Manitoba and is the owner and operator of Green Bean Coffee Imports. He is working toward MDG 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development.

Green Bean imports and roasts direct fair trade coffee beans through a direct trading partnerships with a Bolivian cooperative.

These partnerships benefit producers in the Global South, and in the past few years in which Derryl has been visiting the Bolivian cooperative, he has seen improvements in the members’ ability to purchase equipment and improve their standard of living.

The video profiles of the eight Manitobans have been posted on as part of the I Am Making a Difference campaign. Manitobans are invited to watch the videos and enter a contest to win Fair Trade chocolate for a year. International Development Week is proclaimed by the Canadian International Development Agency, whose funding made MCIC’s IDW 2013 campaign possible.

The other seven global citizens profiled for IDW 2013 are Vurayayi Pugeni (Humanitarian Relief & Disaster Recovery Coordinator at Mennonite Central Committee Canada); Jan Stewart (Associate Professor at the University of Winnipeg); Tito Daodu (Medical student at the University of Manitoba); Pierre Plourde (Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba); Megan Wilton (Midwife in Winnipeg); Christine Penner (Assistant Superintendant at the Interlake School Division) and Jo-Ellen Parry (Project Manager at the International Institute for Sustainable Development).
