Manitoba Celebrates World Fair Trade Day

Just as ethical shopping practices and the importance of consumer power are being widely debated in the media, Saturday May 11, 2013 will mark World Fair Trade Day. The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) will be celebrating this by offering Fair Trade chocolate demonstrations at ethical retailers around Winnipeg and the province. A chocolate demonstration will be held at six Manitoban businesses thanks to a generous donation of Camino chocolates from La Siembra Cooperative. A representative will offer free samples of Camino chocolate and will talk about Fair Trade, Fair Trade Fortnight and answer any other questions consumers may have about Fair Trade

These six businesses are: • Two Farm Kids, 565 34th Street, Brandon (12:00pm – 4:00pm) • Food Fare, 905 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg (1:00pm – 3:00pm) • The Fresh Carrot, 24 Centre Street, Gimli (9:00am – 5:00pm) • Mountain Equipment Cooperative, 303 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg (9:00am – 12:00pm) • Ten Thousand Villages, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg (2:30pm – 4:30pm) • Vita Health, 1-3500 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg (11:00am – 2:00pm)

These businesses have also performed “acts of karmic goodness” throughout Fair Trade Fortnight which runs from May 1-15, 2013 across Canada and encourages Canadians to promote Fair Trade through public events, special promotions in stores and individual choices people make every day. This year, Fair Trade Canada launched a Karma Campaign to promote doing good things, including using and promoting Fair Trade. “World Fair Trade Day is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on products that are produced in a sustainable manner, with no child labour and ensuring the producers are paid a fair wage” says Janice Hamilton, Executive Director of MCIC.
