Making the Grade: Girls and Boys in the Global Classroom
Released on November 24th 2010
While the age limit of compulsory education in Manitoba is grabbing the headlines, the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation brings its annual Generating Momentum Middle Years Conference to Beausejour on Thursday, November 25. Fifty-two students from seven schools in the Sunrise, Hanover, Lord Selkirk and Whiteshell school divisions will be getting together at the Sun Gro Centre to learn about gender equality in education around the world.
The purpose of the Generating Momentum for Our World – Making the Grade: Girls and Boys in the Global Classroom conference is to get youth informed and encourage them to take action when they return to their schools and communities. This is the third year that MCIC is organizing a Generating Momentum conference in Beausejour. Thursday’s conference is the second in a series of five to be held throughout Manitoba between October and March.
Through a series of simulation games, circuit sessions and workshops, participants will learn about gender inequality in education, related to broader issues such as poverty, child labour and water and sanitation. Students will discover answers to important questions such as: How are the Millennium Development Goals on Education being met? Why do only 46% of girls in the developing world graduate high school and why do only 8% of these girls get to go to university or college? What are the factors preventing students from going to school? What can students in Manitoba do in their schools and local communities to help raise awareness?
Students will also have the opportunity to hear from participants in the Canada World Youth Program from Kijabe, Kenya and Nunavut, Canada as they talk about the education system in their respective communities. The conference will comprise middle years students from Blumenort School, East Selkirk Middle School, Ecole Edward Schreyer School, Pinawa Secondary School, Springfield Middle School, Steinbach Junior High and Whitemouth School.
