International Development Week February 7 – 13, 2010
CIDA’s International Development Week provides us with an opportunity to celebrate Canada’s role in the international community. Right here in Manitoba there are individuals, groups and organizations working to make our world a better place.
Many of MCIC’s member agencies are involved in promoting International Development Week and recognizing Manitobans who are making a different. Below is a list of events and initiatives coordinated by MCIC and its members.
Sunday, February 7 MATCH International Annual Fundraising Luncheon Location: La Merage Green Garden Restaurant, 99 Isabel Ave. Winnipeg 1:00pm Tickets are $40 ($20 tax receipt)
The theme of this year’s luncheon will be ‘Addressing Violence Against Women’. The speaker is Sister Lesley Sacouman of Rossbrook House. Contact Stella at (204) 489 3531 for tickets.
Sunday, February 7 WUSC’s Shine a Light Campaign Location: The Forks Market, Winnipeg 5:30pm
A reading by flashlight in support of girls who face challenges in accessing education. Visit shinealight.wusc.ca.
February 7 - 10 and February 10 - 12 Global Citizens: Manitobans Working Together for a Better World exhibit Location: Manitoba Legislature (Feb 7-10), University of Manitoba Engineering Atrium (Feb 10-12)
This exhibit, created to commemorate MCIC’s 35th Anniversary, celebrates the work of Manitobans and Manitoba organizations in international development. It features photographs, stories and video of international projects by MCIC members. Visit www.mcic.ca for more information.
Monday, February 2, 2009 Are You More Concerned About a Better World Than a 7th Grader? Location: Rotunda, Manitoba Legislature Game begins at 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Admission is Free
MCIC is organizing Are You More Concerned About a Better World Than a 7th Grader? – a global issues game show aimed at raising awareness through fun and interactive play. As part of the game, Manitoba politicians will be put in the contestant’s chair and be assisted by a panel of Grade 7 students in answering questions about global issues. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 Canadian Crossroads International 50th Anniversary Dinner Location: Charisma of India Restaurant, 83 Sherbrook St. Winnipeg Buffet dinner at 6:00 p.m. Cost is $22.00

February 3 and 4, 2009 Menno Simons College Social Justice Fair Location: University of Winnipeg, Eckhardt Grammatte Hall (Feb. 3) and Duckworth Centre (Feb. 4) Launch at 7 p.m. February 3 – Guest speaker poet Dunya Mikhail Fair begins at 11:00 a.m. on February 4 Admission is Free
The theme for the fair this year is “Redefining Justice”. This theme came out of discussions focusing on voices that are isolated, marginalized or largely invisible in social justice discourse and practice - ranging from women, beneficiaries of “devel¬opment” in the global south, Indigenous peoples, immi¬grants, members of LGBTTQ community, and others.
Wednesday, February 4, 2009 An Evening of Entertainment and Action for Tanzania Location: The Park Theatre, 698 Osborne, Winnipeg Event begins at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $15.00 and $10.00 for students

Thursday, February 5, 2009 MCIC and World W.I.S.E. are hosting A Friendly Who’s Who in International Cooperation Location: GSA Lounge 217 University Centre, University of Manitoba Event is held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Admission is Free
The event will feature videos, displays and the opportunity for networking.
Thursday, Februaru 5, 2009 Dr. Jeffrey Sachs and Yvo De Boer Debate Climate Change Solutions via video Location: University of Manitoba G.S.A. Lounge, 217 University Centre Event is held from 2:30 p.m. – 4:40 p.m.
This event is titled “Exploring the Impact of a Carbon Market vs. a Carbon Tax”. It is being presented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development and World W.I.S.E. The video debate will be followed by a panel discussion.
Sunday, February 8, 2009 MATCH International - IDW Annual Fundraising Luncheon Location: India Palace Restaurant, 700 Ellice Ave. Winnipeg Lunch is at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $40.00 with a tax receipt for $20.00

The Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) is a coalition of 41 organizations involved in international development. An independent non-profit organization, MCIC has responsibility for distributing Government of Manitoba funds designated for international development and emergency relief and works within Manitoba to build understanding and engagement on international issues.
