Connect. Collaborate. Create Change.

Released on June 12th 2012

Winnipeg, MB –The theme for the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation’s (MCIC) Annual General Meeting is Connect. Collaborate. Create Change. and will focus on the positive role Manitobans are playing in our world. The Annual General Meeting will take place on June 13 at 7:00pm in the Carol Shields Auditorium of the Millennium Library in Winnipeg.

Last year, MCIC’s public engagement work connected with 24,456 people in 49 communities across Manitoba.

MCIC collaborated with its member agencies’ by contributing $1,305,000 to their international development projects as part of the Manitoba Government Matching Grant Program (MGMGP). In addition to the base funding of $1,000,000, the Government of Manitoba provided an additional $300,000 for emergency relief and rehabilitation in the aftermath of the typhoon in the Philippines and the famine in East Africa. Manitobans donated over $2.8 million to our members’ international development work.

Through our polling, we can see that Manitobans are creating change in our world through their actions. For example, a survey on Manitobans’ attitudes to Fair Trade found that almost half (47%) say they purchase Fair Trade goods on at least a monthly (31%) or weekly (16%) basis. This is up from 35% in 2008. Results from a nationwide survey conducted by Vision Critical for the Inter-Council Network about Canadians’ views on global poverty will also be presented. This poll found that one-third of Canadians rank global poverty (hunger in the world) among the 1st, 2nd or 3rd most concerning issues to them globally.

“This has been an exciting year of connecting and collaborating with individuals and organizations to create change” says Janice Hamilton, Executive Director of MCIC. “ We appreciate the funders, our members, Manitoba Services Community Council, Assiniboine Credit Union, the Government of Manitoba and the Government of Canada, who collaborate with us to help create positive change in our world.” MCIC’s Annual Report for 2011/12 can be found at www.mcic.ca/publications.

This year’s guest speaker is Julia Sanchez, President – CEO of the Canadian Council for International Cooperation. Nominations for the board, the presentation of the Paul LeJeune Volunteer Service Award and the Global Citizenship Awards for graduating Grade 12 students and educators will take place.
