Be a Global Citizen: Read - Share - Take Action
This International Development Week, we’re encouraging everyone in Manitoba to be a global citizen by reading books that are entertaining, informative and inspiring — to help create a more just world for everyone.
Reading is one of the best tools we have for starting to think like a global citizen. It’s one of the first ways we learn to relate with people from diverse backgrounds. Books expose us to the experiences of people who are different from us, but who share similar challenges, hopes and aspirations to our own lives.
As we move from self-awareness to social-awareness, reading plays a pivotal role — it allows us to empathize with those who are different than us. It opens us up to the world around us and makes us feel like we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.
No matter where you are on your global citizenship journey, and no matter what issues you care about, it’s never too late to learn something new or experience a different perspective.
To get you started, we’ve put together a Reading List For Global Citizens from Kindergarten to age 100 (or older!) Whether you’re passionate about food security, ending poverty, supporting women’s rights, protecting the environment, or still deciding what changes you want to see in the world, we hope these books will inspire you to take action.
Across the province, libraries are celebrating International Development Week by featuring their top reading picks for global citizens.
Stop by your local library to check out one of the books on our list, or to discover something new!
